Last year, actor Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. This production, though, may align so closely with the mythologized version promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it reads as a endorsement instead of a critique.

The Crafted Superhero

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its entertainment industry have worked together to craft a tailor-made persona of the president. This character is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a TV series launched last October, directed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “rescue” Russia from disorder. While the character's name Mikhail, the implication is unmistakable: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this identical story instead of debunking it. An adaptation based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the Putin cult by framing him not as a cause but as a consequence, shifting the focus to the spin doctors around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, Putin is presented as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. He replies is that he would prefer to rule from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. In reality, none of this ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody ever begged him to accept the role. The presidency was effectively a selection process with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to this process stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the country de facto.

• His list included several politicians, among them an opposition leader subsequently assassinated and a former spy chief.
• Per a journalist who researched his rise, the future president simply fitted the necessary criteria: obedient, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.
• A property developer close to the process stated the primary requirement was manageability and faithfulness, not strength.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Experts agree that the notion of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Stories about his “recruitment work” in East Germany fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and technical tasks, a mid-level functionary not involved with actual agent work.

Interestingly, the move to depicting him as a “spy” may in part have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s debut as 007. His harder interpretation led Russian media and online audiences to make comparisons with their leader. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with his surfaced on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with viewers there, the authorities are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures in the story, even though it includes recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

Domestically, Putin is often an all-powerful presence who remains unseen directly. He is signaled through portraits or calls “from above”. In this new film, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently echo the exact legends it might seek to question.
