Cameron Norrie secured the most notable victory of his professional journey by rallying from a set down to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

While he had before defeated Alcaraz on two separate matches, this triumph represents Norrie's maiden win over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who becomes the newest British man in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualifiers here. I just tried to appreciate my performance in the latter part of the year. To get a win like this, it's the biggest success of my tennis journey, my first win over the top player and arguably the strongest athlete in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st in the world, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive premier event successes, which represented the top run of performances in the Spaniard's developing professional path.

Match Breakdown

Alcaraz looked to be advancing smoothly to success early on as he cruised through the first set. Yet, Norrie steadily worked himself into the match by serving with improved accuracy and engaging the Spaniard into lengthy, grueling points. His unceasing consistency and dependability gradually made an impact.

Through most of the battle, the world number one performed well on serve but he found it challenging to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old appeared especially struggling hitting his primary weapon, which has been the top weapon in the sport for most of this season, committing 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 unforced errors. Across the net, Norrie presented his opponent so few mistakes, maintaining his consistency, athleticism and penetration the entire contest while serving efficiently and choosing his moments to move into the court and attack well.

Career Context

After battling for months due to a major left forearm injury and difficulties with his game, Norrie dropped as far down as No 91 this year.
