The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
