The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

For the first time in 25 years, every region of the state is experiencing dryness. This significant achievement comes on the heels of challenging years marked by insufficient rainfall that intensified wildfire risks and challenged its huge agribusiness.

An Update Indicates An Absence of Dryness

The latest assessment from the national drought tracker showed that all of California is without any level of drought. This shift came after multiple above-normal rainfall that replenished water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville well above their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a local meteorologist.

From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations

Achieving this status featured powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, causing significant overflow, blackouts, and fatalities. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

As late as late December, regions like northeastern California were still classified as unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

However, authorities caution that being out of drought is not the same as having no water worries. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation place it at only about 70% of the typical level.

This snowpack, which provides a significant portion of the state's water as it runs off, is a critical factor for long-term water security. Water officials have emphasized that it is premature to make predictions for the months ahead.

“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”

Even as the official status is entirely green, the focus now shifts to preserving this hard-won hydrological health throughout the months to come.
