The Princess of Wales's Annual Festive Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her annual Yuletide celebration at the iconic London venue, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The large audience will listen to a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Kindness and Compassion

The focus of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Attending the event are a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a message before the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The princess has been making her own measured re-emergence to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians backed by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the former royal to broaden opportunities for music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the trust, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in the evening's event.

"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will feature nine-year-old Saphia Turner, honouree of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

The musical lineup includes recording artist Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
