We have observed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

Christ's response to aggression is to present the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his method regarding offenses states that when someone steals your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing too.
The obvious and clear fact that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a form of profound affection focused on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
