"We just eliminated – I'm not sure if you read – they have a major complex, where the vessels depart from. The other night, we destroyed it. So we hit them decisively," Trump allegedly said to Republican donor and supermarket owner John Catsimatidis on Friday.

If a American strike is confirmed, it would represent the first ground target hit since the US Department of Defense initiated a buildup of US military presence in the region to interdict narco-trafficking operations that the former administration asserts operate under the authority of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

The initial mission of the force deployment has evolved into a quarantine aimed at stopping the country's crude oil shipments.

Online Footage and Administration Claims

Trump has for weeks indicated that American military units are ready to widen the military campaign by attacking targets within Venezuela, a tactic that would theoretically require legislative authorization.

Video footage shared on social media on 24 December purportedly showed an explosion said to be from an industrial zone in a Venezuelan state. But, the footage or the site in question has not been independently verified.

An administration official reportedly informed a news network that the president was describing a narco-trafficking site in his remarks.

The Venezuelan government has not commented on the alleged strike Trump referenced. Additionally, there have been no corroborating news from within the country about it.

The buildup of US military in the region – a stance certain officials have referred to as a naval quarantine – represents the broadest naval operation of his time in office.

Administration officials have stopped short from labeling the action as a full blockade, but have acknowledged that around 15,000 personnel are stationed across the Caribbean and the Gulf, including a carrier strike group, advanced fighter jets, and law enforcement vessels to enforce existing economic sanctions.
