Victor Conte, who devised a plan to distribute hard-to-detect PEDs to elite sports stars featuring baseball icons Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi and track and field star Jones in the past, has died. He reached 75 years.

Government Probe and Legal Outcomes

A national inquiry regarding a separate firm established by Conte, Balco, resulted in the convictions of Jones, elite sprint cyclist Tammy Thomas, and ex-pro football defender Dana Stubblefield, in addition to various support personnel and professionals.

Conte, who served several months in a penitentiary for steroid distribution, spoke openly about his famous former clients. Baseball's Investigation

The investigation inspired the volume titled Game of Shadows. Shortly after the publication date in 2006, baseball Commissioner Bud Selig appointed political figure George Mitchell to investigate steroids.

Following his prison term, he returned to work in 2007 by reviving a nutritional supplements business he had founded two decades earlier called his supplements brand. He located it in the same building that previously contained Balco in Burlingame.
