Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to contest specific calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
